Iceland

Júlíana Jónsdóttir was born in western Iceland and lived as a working-class woman in the tough island community on Breiðafjördur until she emigrated to the USA in 1880, where she died in poverty. She was the first Icelandic woman to publish a poetry collection, Stúlka, in 1876, consisting of traditional verse about the everyday life of working-class women and poetry about the decision to emigrate. Her second and last poetry collection Hagalagðer, a collection of occasional verse, was published in the USA in 1916.
