Birgitta Järvstad has worked as an upper secondary school teacher. Her debut work Första paret ut, an adult novel, was published in 1958 and won the Stora Skandinaviska Romanpriset (the great Scandinavian novel award); she published the novel for young adults Väg mot i morgon in 1961, which was also awarded a prize as the best contemporary novel for teenagers. Birgitta Järvstad writes realist works about issues such as death, the breakdown of the family, and teenage existential fear.
