Maria Berg was the wife of a blacksmith and a self-taught schoolmistress from Närpes in Österbotten. She wrote educational poems for children, poems commissioned for special occasions, and poems describing historical events, employing religious and folk traditions. A number of the latter were published in 1882 in Folkedikter af Maria Berg eller Pali-Maja. Efter hennes död samlade och utgifna af Isak Eriksson-Smeds, student, under medwärkan af I. Oskar J. Rancken.
