Marianne Sällström

1954 -

Sweden

Marianne Sällström was born in Stockholm and studied sociology and Swedish as well as other subjects. She has many years of experience working with the mentally handicapped. In 1983, she made her debut with the long-short story Bara en vanlig glasbit, published in the composite volume Fyra kortromaner.

She writes about love, guilt, and reconciliation, such as in her novel Missa brevis, 1986, which has obvious religious dimensions. Her multi-protagonist novel Rucklet, 1992, is about social outcasts living in rented accommodation who are inexorably pushed out by the new owners. She has also written the short story collection Den osynliga väggen, 1989, in which the title story depicts the mentally handicapped character of Olof, who tries to negotiate the invisible walls between people and within the individual person.
