Anne-Sofie Nielsen grew up in Värnamo, graduated from Lund University, and continued her studies at Stockholm university.
In the 1970s, she worked as an actress and published her debut work, the autobiographical novel Underläge in 1978, in which the main character, as in her subsequent novels Förnekelse, 1980, and I afton dans, 1986, is an almost painfully afflicted woman. In the 1980s she worked at the Länsteatern playhouse in Jönköping, where her one-act play Tillsammans blir vi två was performed in 1990.
