Sigrid Elmblad was born into a middle-class family in Stockholm, married the opera singer Johannes Elmblad in 1888, and had two daughters. She was a translator and was employed by the newspaper Dagens Nyheter from 1887 to 1896. In 1883, under the pseudonym Toivo, she published the poem I hägn, which was sold and the proceeds given to a refuge for defenceless women. In 1885, she published Vind för våg, a collection of poems, short stories, and drama sketches which, among other things, consider the theme of women making a choice between love and art.
