Hanne Aga was born in Trøndelag and studied physiotherapy, social science, and Nordic languages and literature. She is divorced and has one child. Her debut work, the poetry collection Skjering med lys, was published in 1981. Her major works are Forsvar håpet (P), 1983, and Hard, Klar Rose. Ei open historie (P), 1985.

In her poetic novel Bror sorg, 1986, she creates a tense atmosphere around taboo subjects such as incest and death using lyrical texts and quotations. Her other works include Presis overalt (P), 1988, Utan Bevis, 1991, Gå i skuggen, vent på vinden (P), 1993, and Kraftas, (P), 1994.

Hanne Aga writes in Nynorsk (New Norwegian), thus adopting a clear political and linguistic stance.

The above biography was first published in 1998. Since then, Hanne Aga has written a number of poetry collections, including Solis, 2000, Eit rom å falle inn i, 2005, and Som om ein ny dag skal komme, 2008.

She was the recipient of the Norwegian state work grant for artists between 1987 and 1990, was awarded the Blix Prize in 1990, and has received the Norwegian state guaranteed income for artists since 1991.
