Valtonen, Hilja

Written by:  Kristina Malmio

Hilja Valtonen passed the upper secondary school leaving examination in 1919 and worked as a school teacher for forty-three years. She wrote humorous and witty novels, pamphlets, and discourses. Her first novel Nuoren opettajattaren varaventtiili, 1926, was a success with the critics and public alike.

She has been referred to as the queen of print runs, and her books have been classified as light literature. Her novels, Vaimoke, 1933, and Hätävara, 1938, were filmed. The protagonist in her stories is often a rebellious woman who questions male authority in different ways.
