Larsson, Elisabet

Written by:  Christina Sarrimo

Elisabet Larsson made her debut, after many years of teaching, with the novel Förberedelse inför besök av en japan, 1987, an extremely well-composed work focusing on one person's split conscience. The main character is one of many fleeting and estranged characters from the present day, to whom the author constantly returns. In Bära hand (N), 1990, which describes a witness whose consciousness and memory disappear, she accentuates the conflict between the individual and the surrounding world, specifically criticising the ability of language to express the fragmentation of present-day existence. Her characters are steered by invisible powers beyond any control. In Öga mot öga (N), 1992, Den sista länken, (N), 1994, and Bomullsfåren i makaronifälten (N), 1997, she continues her examination of modern man's standardised muteness and shapeless existence.
