Amalia Fahlstedt

1853 - 1923

Sweden

Amalia Fahlstedt grew up in a middle-class family in Stockholm. When the family fell into financial difficulty after the father’s death, Amalia Fahlstedt qualified as a teacher and, together with one of her sisters, set up a school for young children. Strindberg encouraged her writing ambitions and ensured that her first book I flygten (SS) was published in 1883. In both her first and second short story collection Ax och halm, 1885, she critically examines female life. Amalia Fahlstedt considered a working partnership to be the best foundation for a marriage.
