Wava Stürmer was born in Belgian Congo, now Democratic Republic of the Congo and now lives in Jakobstad in Finland. She holds a business diploma.
She made her debut as a poet in 1955 and, thanks to impetus from the women’s movement in Sweden, came out early with a new feminist awareness. Subsequent to her feminist success with the poetry collection Det är ett helvete att målå himlar, 1970, she published the everyday, realist novel Slå tillsammans, 1976, about a women’s commune, followed by the novel Väntansväg, 1985, in which she describes a female cycle, and then Så länge vi minns, 1990, a collection of gently rhythmic poems.
Her song texts for Sångbok för kvinnor, 1973, were well-known throughout Scandinavia in the 1970s. She has written for the stage and television and is a dynamic force within the artistic collaboration of the Kvinnoskribentgruppen (the women writers’ group) in Österbotten.
