Unnur Eiríksdóttir grew up with relatives and moved to Reykjavík at the age of seventeen, where she attended evening classes and had private tuition.
Her debut novel Villibirta, 1969, is the story of a young woman’s search for her artistic identity in the war years in Reykjavík. The realistic story, which is broken by surrealist passages, is fast-paced and written in dense, metaphorical language. Her other works are Í Skjóli háskans (P), 1971, and Hvítmánuður (SS), 1974. Unnur Eiríksdóttir also translated works by Camilla Collett and Jean-Paul Sartre.
