Tove Pilgaard taught in Tønder as a lecturer in Danish, was initially a domestic servant, office assistant, housewife at an estate, and manager of a canteen before she took the higher preparatory examination in 1972 and embarked on a university degree. In 1985, she published the book Edith Södergrans lyrik.

She has written the novels Brudstykker af et pigeliv, 1982, and Modsætninger, 1985, about the life of a girl and a woman in the country in the 1930s and 1940s with unfulfilled dreams and a loveless marriage. In 1988, she published Korsangeren og andre noveller and in 1992 Dukkenat (N), in which a woman goes to Spain to write a book about Edith Södergran’s poetry and contemplates her conflict-laden marriage.

The above biography was first published in 1998. Since then, Tove Pilgaard has published the three novels Glasbjerget, 2000, Fuglehammen, 2004, and Forvandlingsdragten, 2007.
