Guðmundsdóttir, Rósa også kaldet Vatnsenda-Rósa

Written by:  Dagný Kristjánsdóttir

Rósa Guðmundsdóttir was born in northern Iceland, was surrounded by scandal, and admired for her rhymed epistles and ballads about passion, love, deceit, and pain. She was famed for her beauty and intelligence, was married at the age of seventeen, and had three children with her husband and three with her lover, who was murdered in 1828. Nine years later she divorced her first husband and married a man nineteen years her junior, whom she travelled and lived with until her death. She earned a living as an autodidact midwife.
