Emmy Drachmann depicted in her work Erindringer, Barndom og Ungdom indtil 1883, 1925, the precarious balance between ordinary life and Bohemian life in the artistic circles of the period and was a widely-travelled author and translator, who was well versed in foreign languages. She was born into an established middle-class family, and her love for the poet Holger Drachmann and his love for her elder sister Polly eventually led, after a romantic and dramatic course of events, to her becoming the poet’s second wife in 1879. She was his muse and mainstay until their life together ended, and they divorced in 1903. In addition to her memoirs, she also wrote a number of novels.
